New Zealand Immigration
New Zealand has long been a destination of choice for individuals looking for a high quality of life or to join relatives who have already discovered the joys of living in New Zealand. New Zealand immigration policy has been designed to attract highly skilled well educated individuals who can contribute most to the New Zealand economy. New Zealand is also eager to attract skilled individuals who have experience and/or a job offer in one of the areas of skills shortages. These areas include public health, engineering and computer animation. (These areas are subject to frequent alteration, so please get in touch for an up to date list)
There are two main categories through which individuals can obtain permanent residence in New Zealand.
Skilled Migrant Category (SMC)
The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) of the New Zealand Immigration system allows highly skilled individuals to short-cut the normal need to apply for several stages of visas and instead receive full residence rights straight away. Under the SMC, applicants gain points in areas including age, qualifications, previous work experience and having a close relation already in New Zealand. The SMC does not require the individual to hold an offer of work in New Zealand (although having such an offer increases the chances of being accepted) – Instead the applciation is completely driven by the individual, who if successful, will gain the right to live and work in New Zealand. Please click here for more information on the Skilled Migrant Category.
Work to Residence scheme
The Work to Residence scheme allows individuals who do not meet the points requirement for the SMC (but do have an offer of work) to live and work in New Zealand for two years. Individuals are then normally granted permanent residence. Under this scheme, the offer of work needs either to be in one of the areas of shortage occupation or with a government approved employer. If you do have such a job offer, your employer will probably be able to assist with your application. However, if you have any queries regarding this scheme, or would like our assistance, please get in touch.
